USC Union men’s soccer are REGION CHAMPIONS! The Bantams secured the regional title Friday afternoon with a thrilling 2–1 road victory over USC Salkehatchie, delivering a championship performance highlighted by perseverance, teamwork and a dramatic game-winning goal in the closing minutes.
The regional championship marks a significant accomplishment for the Bantams, whose hard work and determination throughout the season culminated in a memorable victory on the road. With a roster made up largely of international student-athletes, the team has brought together players from different countries and backgrounds, united by a common goal and a relentless commitment to one another.
Union took an early lead in the 25th minute when Rolando Hernandez finished a setup from Valerio Cuscina to put the Bantams ahead 1–0. Union maintained its advantage into the second half, with goalkeepers Salim Janna and Pau Manso combining for seven saves to help keep Salkehatchie at bay.
Salkehatchie tied the match in the 85th minute, threatening to send the championship contest in a different direction. But the Bantams refused to back down. Just three minutes later, in the 88th minute, Daniel Hoyos found the back of the net off his second assist of the day from Cuscina, giving Union a decisive 2–1 lead and sealing the victory.
The late-game response embodied the determination that carried the Bantams to the regional championship. Rather than allowing a late equalizer to define the match, Union responded with composure, confidence and the will to finish what the team had worked so hard to achieve.
Head Coach Marc Curlee says “I couldn’t be prouder of this team and the perseverance, dedication and hard work they’ve shown throughout the season. Our players come from different countries and backgrounds, but they share one thing in common: the heart, grit and determination to always have a dog in the fight, no matter the circumstances. That fight comes from within, and watching them come together, push through adversity and earn this region championship is something truly special.”
Cuscina’s two assists played a key role in the victory, while Union’s defensive effort and seven combined goalkeeper saves helped secure the championship result.
USC Union’s regional title is a testament to more than one game. It represents the countless hours of preparation, the commitment to improving as a team and the resilience required to compete when the pressure is highest. For a team built on players who have traveled from around the world to represent USC Union, the championship is a shared achievement that reflects their unity, determination and pride in wearing the Bantams uniform.
With Friday’s victory, the Bantams have earned the distinction of Region Champions, giving USC Union men’s soccer a championship moment to celebrate and a lasting reminder of what can be accomplished through hard work, perseverance and belief in one another.
