Meet Our Team: Micah Stancil and William Royce

Head Baseball Coach Micah Stancil is using his experience as a professional baseball player to push the Bantam Baseball team to the next level. Micah was born in Germany, but grew up in Mooresboro, NC. He has played several other sports besides baseball growing up, and especially loves disc golf and skateboarding. His career included a short stint with a minor league team. He was also a pitcher for an international team.

After leaving professional baseball, he worked as an assistant coach at Broome High School and coached the first Fall League in Spartanburg County, where he won a region championship. He also worked as the head baseball coach at Spartanburg Day School and led the Spartanburg American Legion Team Post 28 to a state championship. He won two region championships and a state championship as head coach of the Tri-Community Senior League team in North Carolina.

“I’ve had many great USC Union memories over the years,” said Micah. “I’d say probably the first time we beat Walters State. It was our first time as a program beating a nationally ranked team. They were ranked #1 in the nation at that time. Since then, we have beaten the #1 ranked team in the nation 3 times in the past 7 years.”

Micah has three children with his wife, Shannon, and has one grandson. A fun fact about Micah is that he owns a turtle farm where he keeps and breeds endangered turtles.

Micah says he doesn’t really set goals for each season, but rather sets expectations. “My expectations for this year are to keep breaking records as a baseball program as we have done every year and to make these student athletes better men to send off into our communities,” he said.

William Royce, USCU Head Softball Coach, celebrated his 100th collegiate win with the Lady Bantams this year, which he cites as his favorite USC Union memory so far. Royce is from Columbia, SC and received his bachelor’s in early childhood education from Coastal Carolina in 1993. He went on to earn his master’s in education from Cambridge University (2007) and Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University in 2014.

Royce played tennis at Coast Carolina and has coaching experience in high school softball and high school volleyball. He also works as a private pitching instructor.

In 2021 and 2025, Royce was named NJCAA Region 10 Division I Coach of the Year. The Lady Bantams have also finished Runner-Up in NJCAA Region 10 in years 2022 2023, and 2025.

Royce is the dad of two beautiful daughters, Gracyn and Devyn, and a dog dad to his goldendoodle, Piper. He spent the summer out recruiting, attending U17 Canadian Nationals in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and The Sparkler in Denver, CO.

“Last year, we celebrated the best season ever by “Setting The Standard” as we set and broke so many school records,” said Royce. “This year, Team 9 has embraced the “All of Us, Not Some of Us!” motto as we are committed to taking The Lady Bantams to the next level.”
