Meet Jennifer Emswiler, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts

Title: Assistant Professor of Fine Arts

Education: Defiance College – B.A. in Fine Arts, University of South Carolina – M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) in Studio Painting

Personal: Jennifer Emswiler was born and raised in North East Ohio. She attended a JE1liberal arts college in Ohio called Defiance College, where she accomplished her bachelor of art. She continued her education at the University of South Carolina where she earned her M.F.A. in Studio Painting. During her undergrad, Jennifer started as a double major in Graphic Design and Fine Arts; however, she soon realized that graphic design was not the path for her. Jennifer’s undergrad mentor, Steve Smith, the Emeritus Professor of Art, helped her find a passion for teaching in higher education.

During her spare time, Jennifer enjoys distance running. She has run in road races and she hopes to continue running. She enjoys hiking and camping as well. Of course, she always loves to create, whether it’s a painting or drawing. Her favorite foods are raw oysters on the half shell and Vietnamese soup.

Jennifer chose USC Union because she desired an environment that cultivates mentoring, which she found here at USC Union.

“USC Union is a reminiscent of my alma matter, Defiance College,” Jennifer says, “Union is a small, intimate school that thrives on the character of the students, faculty, and staff that embody it.”

Jennifer has lived in several beautiful and wonderful places, however, Anchorage, Alaska holds a special place in Jennifer’s heart.

“Anchorage, Alaska is a magical, mysterious, and beautiful place,” says Jennifer, “I experienced some of the most spectacular things from the northern lights to wild life, cuisine, and amazing craft beer. The people, atmosphere, scenery, and culture are like nothing I had ever experienced in my life and I was fortunate enough to call that place home for almost three years.”
