In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the faculty and staff of the University of South Carolina Union proudly present the sixth annual Latin American Film Festival (Sept. 14- Oct 18). This year’s selections offer a series of cinematic snapshots that explore the theme “Threats and Resistance” across Latin America. These films, chosen to represent contemporary and historical issues, highlight a range of external threats, including the possibility of deportation, government efforts to suppress past crimes, foreign intervention, and societal limitations.

While we often recognize how to respond to external dangers, the films also delve into more complex internal struggles: finding the courage to speak out in the face of intimidation, navigating mental health challenges, and reconciling questions of personal identity. These internal battles often demand even more from us.
Although the stories are rooted in Latin America, many of their themes are universally resonant: living in a society that doesn’t fully understand you, the enduring bonds of family, the struggle to make ends meet, the strength of community, and, yes, even the importance of ruby slippers.
