Alumni Spotlight: CJ Holcombe

I started at USC Union in the Fall of 2011. After graduating in the Spring of 2013, I transferred to USC Upstate where I graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice.

After transferring from Pikeville University and Spartanburg Community College, I found that USC Union gave me a sense of academic purpose. I discovered a community that nurtured me academically, which allowed me the confidence I needed to be successful here and at Upstate.

While I was a student, I was lucky to have Dr. Samantha Hauptman as a professor. I credit her for helping me grow my interest in law enforcement. Her experience and love of teaching allowed me to have a chance to see the opportunities a Criminal Justice major has. Thank you, Dr, Hauptman for inspiring me!

While I was a traditional age student, I worked 30 plus hours a week at Midway BBQ. That did not leave a lot of time for campus activities. I did, however, take part in the Opportunity Scholars Program. OSP was a valuable organization for me as it offered many opportunities for academic success.

Your education is something that no can take away from you. Do not take this for granted. USC Union is a wonderful opportunity for each of you to succeed academically, professionally, and personally.

I am currently a Lance Corporal with the SC State Transport Police. STP governs SC highways with both federal and state laws pertaining to commercial motor vehicle enforcement as well as non-commercial drivers.

In 2021 I was honored to be selected as Region and State Officer of the Year.

Though I am from Spartanburg, USC Union became home to me. I was happy, comfortable, and confident on campus and in the classroom. I credit USC Union with getting me on track and where I am today. I love this community so much that I now live in Union County and remain active in the community.

Without the influence and more importantly the positive impact that USC Union had on my life, I have no idea where I would be today.
